Opening Ceremony and Welcome Function 
The Sunday of the symposium, 16:00 – 20:00
Venue: The opening ceremony will take place in the Plenary Room in Hall 2 of the CTICC, with the reception taking place in the exhibition, catering and poster area in Hall 3 and 4.

Join us for the opening ceremony in the plenary room. The program will feature a short historic introduction to microbial ecology in Africa, followed by our first plenary presenter of the symposium, Jill Banfield, University of California, Berkeley, USA. We also have invited an amazing South African choir to sing you a couple songs to welcome you in Cape Town. Afterwards you are invited to join all delegates for a nice evening with drinks and snacks.

ISME Social Gathering 
The Tuesday of the Symposium, 19:00 - Late

Tiedje Award Reception and Evening Lecture
The Thursday of the Symposium, 17:30 – 19:30
Venue: The reception will take place immediately after the Thursday poster session in the exhibition, catering and poster area in Hall 3 and 4 of the CTICC. At 18.30, we will go into the plenary room in Hall 2 for the Tiedje Award Winner to begin his lecture.

Kenneth Nealson, University of Southern California, USA, is this year's recipient of the prestigious "James Tiedje Award". He will be giving a lecture of his award-winning work, after a short reception celebrating his research.

As always, ISME has a free day right in the middle of the symposium to catch-up with your colleagues, explore the region and relax a bit in between the science.  But we also thought about post-tours or pre-tours too!
