Two postdoctoral researchers for a three-year NSF-funded project

Dr Trinity Hamilton and Dr Jim Elser seek two postdoctoral researchers for a three-year, collaborative NSF-funded project: “Testing for nutrient limitation in alpine snow algae ecosystems”

Two (2) funded postdoctoral researcher positions are available, one to be based at the Flathead Lake Biological Station (FLBS, University of Montana) and one to be based at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. The postdoctoral researchers will play a central role in a project to examine nutrient limitation in alpine snow algae ecosystems through field sampling surveys and nutrient limitation experiments as well as experiments at the Subzero Research Laboratory at Montana State University. Postdoctoral researchers will design, lead, and execute extensive field campaigns to examine snow algae productivity and stoichiometry as a function of environmental N and P supplies in mountains of the western USA, perform novel field and laboratory experiments testing for nutrient limitation, and quantify how nutrient-driven snow algae proliferation affects albedo properties of snow and thus accelerates snow melt.

The project will involve a highly collaborative research environment among Elser, Hamilton, and the postdoctoral researchers with sharing of collective expertise and experiences to drive forward both individual projects and the overall goals of the proposed research. Elser and Hamilton will provide training in data collection, analyses, manuscript preparation; guidance in career development; and opportunities for outreach. The postdoctoral researchers will also have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate students and to contribute to the development and teaching of a Cryosphere Ecology course at FLBS. The postdoctoral researchers will have full access to next generation sequencing, imaging, and analytical infrastructure and expertise at FLBS and UMN. The project requires significant travel and fieldwork. The Postdoctoral Research Associates will develop and writes papers for peer-reviewed scientific journals reporting the results of these studies, monitor and guide undergraduate researchers in fieldwork and laboratory analyses, and contribute to development of a new summer field course.
