Research Fellow in Coral Holobiont Ecogenomics

Functional dynamics of skeletal microbiota in healthy and bleached corals from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Position Summary

The Research Fellow on this ARC funded research (Functional dynamics of skeletal microbiota in healthy and bleached corals) will conduct molecular research on the microbiome of the coral skeleton, which is not well understood in terms of its structure, functional potential, metabolic interactions and roles during coral bleaching. Using a combination of metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, this project aims to characterise how microbial functions are structured along, and contribute to, physico-chemical gradients in the skeleton; build models of metabolic interactions between holobiont models; and track these functions and interactions during simulated coral bleaching.

The appointee will participate in research planning and will responsible for metagenomics and metatranscriptomics studies. The appointee will lead the data generation, analysis and interpretation and will contribute to the supervision of research students, thereby acquiring important science leadership skills. The appointee will also play a critical role in disseminating the results as journal articles and conference presentations.
