The research group Geomicrobiology within the Department of Microorganisms of the Leibniz-Institute DSMZ offers the position of a Postdoctoral research associate in lake nitrification (m/f/d)

The appointment will be initially for 2 years and is subject to extension based on a positive interim evaluation for another 2 years. The salary level will be according to TV-L 13. The position is offered as full time and is not appropriate for part time work.

We apply metagenomics and metatranscriptomics coupled to cultivation approaches and biogeochemical process measurements to study microorganisms responsible for nitrification in freshwater lakes. The postdoctoral researcher will focus on enrichment of important microbial freshwater clades in combination with genome-centric analyses of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data obtained from these enrichments and the original freshwater environment. CARD-FISH and/or qPCR analyses in support of these experiments will be conducted as well. In parallel, the establishment of biogeochemical process measurements as based on 15N- and 13C-isotope measurements are anticipated. The Leibniz Institute DSMZ is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments for molecular, chemical, and microbiological work including an own next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics core facility. Instruments for analyses of isotope data are available at the neighboring BRICS institute of the Technical University of Braunschweig.

We seek a highly motivated and creative person with a track record in the fields of microbial physiology, molecular microbiology, and environmental microbiology. Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in microbiology or a similar research field and have published at least two papers in peer-reviewed journals. Working experience in cultivation, meta-omics techniques, bioinformatics analyses, and microscopy techniques is a pre-requisite. Familiarity with conducting biogeochemical process measurements using stable isotopes is considered as a plus.
