PhD student in the PhD program "Microbial Symbioses"

General Information

Several positions are available in the PhD program "Microbial Symbioses" at the University of Vienna, Austria.

Our students have a background in microbiology, microbial ecology, evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, cell biology, plant sciences, or marine sciences. They are interested in investigating the complex interplay between microbes and their hosts in an interdisciplinary and international research environment.

Diverse research projects are available, ranging from marine symbioses to human and plant microbiomes.

The deadline for the current call is January 10, 2020. Applications may be considered after the deadline if not all positions are filled.

Research projects of successful applicants are funded for a period of up to four years, according to the Austrian Science Fund standard salary for PhD students (€ 2,162 gross salary per month in 2019).

Selection process

The admission procedure might vary depending on the call, but includes:

  • evaluation of the written application by a panel of faculty members
  • invitation of selected applicants to the University of Vienna, and two 15-minute (chalk-talk) presentations by each of the applicants on their master’s thesis and a scientific paper selected by the faculty panel, respectively.
  • personal interviews, introduction of available research projects by faculty members, and meetings with students
