PhD position on the microbial ecophysiology of ammonia-oxidizing archaea

Nordcee at the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark, is looking for a highly motivated and curiosity-driven PhD student with interest in the ecophysiology and microbial ecology of microbial key players in global element cycling.

The successful candidate will study the ecophysiology of ammonia-oxidizing archaea under oxygen limitation. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea are key players in the nitrogen cycle of the world’s oceans. They are frequently found in oxygen-depleted environments like marine oxygen-minimum zones or sediments though they are thought to have a strictly aerobic physiology.

This PhD projects aim is to investigate the role of ammonia-oxidizing archaea in such habitats combining microbial physiology experiments using e.g. stable isotopes and microsensors with comparative genomics, proteomics and gene expression analyses.

Required qualifications: Applicants should hold an MSc degree in (environmental) microbiology, microbial ecology, biology, environmental sciences or related fields. They should have working experience in the cultivation of environmental microbes and molecular techniques. Experience in (meta)genome and/or transcriptome analyses is of advantage. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
